That second series of Voltron I am talking about is commonly referred to as Vehicle Voltron. I am uncertain as to exactly when this series made it's appearance, but it did air shortly after the run of the first season of Lion Force Voltron. I am also uncertain as to how many episodes were in this Voltron though it did only seem to have a single season run. Voltron reappeared in I believe, 1988 in syndication on the USA Network. Also, Voltron LionForce was briefly picked up by the Cartoon Network in 1997/98. It's second season ran at the same time in limited markets as "The New Adventures of Voltron." The Vehicle Voltron has yet to make a reappearance in over a decade.
