Information
Crickets
usually are black and adults vary in length from 0.5
to 1.25 inches. The brownish-colored rear wings project
back beyond the front wings like pointed coat tails.
Adult females have long swordlike ovipositors at the
tip of their abdomens. Adult male crickets rub their
wings to make a chirping sound to attract females. Field
crickets feed on plants and decaying plant material
and can damage various field crops. They also consume
dead or dying insects, including their own species.
Occasionally they enter homes in the fall when nighttime
temperatures cool down, though they seldom reproduce
there. Crickets also are attracted to lights at night,
which may draw them to buildings.
